INTERNSHIP SUMMARY

During your internship, you’ll work with the Smart Bases Team. The US Ignite Smart Bases Program hosts a portfolio of smart base programs that help military installations implement technology projects in key operational areas, including advanced broadband and IoT networks, energy resiliency, connected and autonomous vehicles, public safety and quality of life, weather risk management, drones, and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).

The intern will support the software development activities for the Energy Waste Savings (EWS) and Building Fault Detection (BFD) applications or Heat Risk Management (HRM) application. These projects focus on energy management and operational efficiency, providing actionable insights for facilities management and improving the quality of life and health.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Must be enrolled in or have recently graduated with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field in the United States.
1+ year of programming experience with front-end and back-end technologies such as JavaScript, React, Python, or Node.js and a strong understanding of Algorithms.
Past work experience or coursework in developing APIs and working with databases.
Ability to review and analyze existing codebases, understand business logic, and contribute to the development flow.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Hands-on experience through coursework or previous work with data engineering, including setting up sensor data pipelines using third-party APIs, and proficient in data aggregation and manipulation.
Familiarity with Azure, Git and Databricks
Hands-on experience through coursework or previous work in SQL for database management and data manipulation.
Understanding of Azure, Databricks, RESTful APIs, data pipelines, and software version control (e.g., Git).
Background in IoT or energy management systems
Prior experience with geographical data manipulation and GIS

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Collabore with the scrum team for the web-based and/or mobile based software application development, including the integration of new functionalities and scaling the applications.
Implement and manage sensor data pipelines; manipulate, and store data from various sources.
Conduct code reviews and contribute to refining the EWS and BFD codebases.
Develop and maintain APIs to support data visualization and dashboard functionality.
Perform testing and debugging of application features to ensure system reliability.
Resolve bugs identified in pilot feedback and improve overall system efficiency.
Prepare material and participate in product release including release planning and material preparation, onboarding and working with users, and collecting feedback

LOCATION AND PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE

US Ignite is headquartered in Washington, DC. The candidate can be local to Washington, DC, or remote. The proposed internship period of performance is January 2025 - April 2025.

COMPENSATION

The performance period for this internship is approximately four months with an expectation of 20-29 hours per week at $25-$30/hour compensation.
